Pay more, eat less

November 2010

Rule 44, "Pay more, eat less"
(Food Rules: An Eater's Manual, by Michael Pollan

I say: "Don't be a fryer"

There is an expression commonly used in Israel: "Don't be a fryer". Its meaning is kind of: don't let people take advantage of you, like in traffic, don't let anyone cut in front of you, or in other situations make sure you are the one who comes out on top. It often refers to finding the best financial deal in town, whether it is purchasing clothing, a plane ticket, a hotel, or even food.

With food, this has become a global issue. We are brainwashed by all the advertisements on TV, the radio, and in newspapers to spend the least we can for the biggest amount possible. Large cokes, big cereal boxes, huge boxes of cookies, oversized chocolate bars, "buy 5 get 1 free", etc… Nowadays Americans spend less than 10% of their income on food and worldwide food costs have also declined.
Most of the cheaper food, however, IS actually cheap! Large in size but cheap in nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and rich in unhealthy fats, sugars, preservatives, chemicals, taste enhancers and the list goes onnnnnn …

And so we eat cheap, and then we can't stop eating because our body is craving nutrition, so we eat more and get fat and sick, and in the long run we end up actually spending more than ever, but it's for high healthcare costs, on medications and other related expenses.

So, is the cheapest food really the best deal in town?

Wouldn’t we better off by paying a bit more, getting smaller amounts but of better quality (for organic products, humanely raised animal products, healthy proteins, superfoods, whole foods, real chocolate, and so on ..) ?

Thereby, we'd really be spending towards our own good health rather than buying our kids and ourselves cheap food causing sickness….
It actually is very expensive to be sick …

Now, who's really the fryer ?

Video of the Month
Collecting Sea Weed in Ireland

Unexpectedly, I have been a globe-trotter these last few months. Found myself on the west coast of Ireland on an island called Inishmore, in the Aran Islands. It was so refreshing to see people living calm and simple lives, happy cows roaming green fields and being able to gather sea weed straight from the shore.

I was sooo excited to find this fresh Kombo Sea Weed while walking on the beach.
Up till then, I only enc
ountered the dry form in health food shops. Now this is high nutrient food, loaded with minerals and way more nutritious than earth plants! It is great to add to stews, soups and other dishes for added minerals and nutrients. It is high in Protein, Vitamin B1, B2, B3, Vitamin C, Iodine, Calcium, Iron..

Sweet Sushi Rolls

(or Sweet Sushi Popsicles)

Some of my daily i
ngredients nowadays include: Sea weed, Cacao nibs and Whole unhulled tehini paste. I eat them almost at every meal in different variations. I invented this delicious recipe the other day – an interesting and unusual combination. Enjoy!

1 Nori sea weed sheet
1 ripe banana

1 Tablespoon tehini paste
1 Tablespoon cacao nibs
1 Tablespoon Gogi ber
a few crushed walnuts

Place the Nori sea weed on a board.
Place the banana at the base of the sheet and thinly slice it.
Spread tehini generously on the slices of banana (important to spread the tehini first so all the other ingredients ca
n stick to it).
Sprinkle: cacao nibs, gogi berries, cinnamon, crushed walnuts (or any other nuts, dried fruits, coconut oil …)
Fold up the bottom, fold in the sides and roll up (put some tehini along the edge as you finish rolling to get the end to stick) and cut in half.
May be eaten right away or frozen to make 2 "popsicles" (defrost 3 minutes before eating).

Wishing us a month of spending more money on our food
And eating less
