Junk food and brain chemistry

We strive to be healthy so we can live - we don't live so we can be healthy.

Ohhhh - it's so true. Some people "I know" (including myself, many years ago) become so fanatic about health they forget that health is only the vehicle - it isn’t the destination.
On the other hand others ditch health and say: "I'd rather enjoy life - who cares about health" (…until they get sick …). So they eat and drink everything, don't take care of their body, overwork, have too much stress, not enough sleep, no physical activity … and usually don't really feel that great past the age of 25. I meet them in their forties\fifties when they understand they can't go on like that much longer.

I believe there should be a balance between the two. That balance does shift, the healthier we become. Each person has to find his own way, not being a fanatic, but yes, it's so very important to wake up to what we put in our "vehicle" and how we treat it, so we can live happy, healthy energetic lives.

Junk Food

Did you know that eating junk food can change the chemistry in your brain?

An article on CNN.com reports on scientific findings that ju
nk food is addictive.
Addiction come
s in many forms, and food addiction is nothing new.
The article states “high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin". Food is made more addictive when it is stripped of its nutrients.
It’s not surprising that processed, chemicalized foods alter brain chemistry. What’s surprising is that fast fo
od is still the number one choice for many people.
How do we overcome fast food addiction?

Awareness is the first step.
Gradually transitioning to a diet of whole foods is the next.

Recipe of the Month
Bean Noodles, Greens And Seaweed

Here is a good example about not becoming fanatic. Yes, noodles are processed, and I can't say they are the healthiest thing on the planet. But I don't eat them very often.
On the other hand they aren't the worst thing either - Once in a while they won'
t hurt you.
This dish is very delicious.

Seaweed (VERY healthy)

Greens (VERY VERY healthy)
Noodles (this is where not being the fanatic comes in)
Salad vegetable
s (very healthy)

Ingredients – for 2 servings

1/2 package of bean noodles
1/2 cup sea
weed (wakame, arame or hijiki)
4 celery stalks (leaves included)
bunch of fresh mint
2 green onions
2 cucumbers

hot pepper
1-2 teaspoon
soy sauce
1 tablespoon apple vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
sesame seeds

1 teaspoon maple syrup


Method


Soak beans and seaweed separately in water for 2-3 minutes (or as suggested on the package), drain excess water.
Finely slice: celery, mint and green onions
Dice: cucumbers
Put all ingredients in a mixing bowl, mix and serve.
