December - Synchronistic Chanukah

Together with my good friend and natural healer Vishva (yes, despite his name, he is Israeli), we have just finished leading a 3-week detox program. We were a group of 17 courageous people who decided to take control of our health (both our mothers joined the program!).
For 9 days I was mostly on lemon water with maple syrup and hot
cayenne pepper, plus a glass of vegetable juice here and there.
It was incredible to see how easy it is to go without food, still feeling energetic, while having life go on almost as normal. Towards the end of the fast I actually didn’t even want to go back to eating. The energy, the lightness, the sense of smell, the clear skin, the flexibility, the amount of time that is freed by not dealing with "what will I eat?" …. It is amazing to realize how much we are connected to our food, meals, shopping, washing, cooking, chewing…

I feel lucky and honored to have been able to lead and go through this process myself, this very special opportunity of giving the body a rest, letting it flush out
toxins, while getting connected back with my true self.

Monthly Focus: Synchronisty
Being at the right place at the right time
“a miracle”

Do you ever have those OMG moments? Like when you dial a friend and they text you at the exact same moment?

I find these synchronistic moments to be a fascinating and valuable part of life. If you pay attention you will see that these moments are telling you that you are in the right place at the right time.

Of course there are also those not-so-cool moments when everything seems to conspire against you. Like days when your computer crashes the moment you're about to finish an important document, and then you get stuck in a traffic jam when you're in a hurry to get somewhere. It's like the universe doesn't want you to accomplish what you set out to do that day. What's up with that?

I've realized that life is never against me, or anyone else. In fact, these negative experiences might be telling you something. You could kick and curse at the computer or get mad if you get stuck in a traffic jam, but it's not the most effective strategy. Instead, I recommend that you pause for a few moments and reflect on why this might be happening.

Wherever you are in your life, in your career, relationships and health I encourage you to take a moment to look and see why things might be going the way they are. By slowing down and reflecting on what the universe might be telling you, good things will be more likely to come your way.

My Healthy tip for Chanukah

Consider this: Instead of eating a sufganiya, you can choose a different round option: a dried fig, an apple, an orange, a persimmon… pay attention to how you feel when finishing it, compared to how others feel after eating a sufganiya. It’s an interesting experiment …
If you do choose to eat a sufganiya, give it all your attention, sit down, smell it, look at it, chew it slowly, enjoy it, no guilt allowed.

Cooking Focus: Baking

The Jewish holiday Chanukah which falls this year in mid-December is a Festival of Lights and you might say of Oils too. There is a lot of deep frying and eating very oily foods: Sufganiyot (deep fried dough filled with jam) and Latkes (fried potato patties).
I am not at all against oil, but certainly am not for unhealthy, toxic, hydrogenated oils (soy, corn, canola, sunflower…) which you see while walking down the aisles of any supermarket and that all the holiday foods are fried in. click to read more about oils.

Many vegetables actually taste best baked. Baking brings out the very essence of the vegetables, as ca
ramelizing makes them sweeter and more grounding, especially squashes and root vegetables. It’s so easy: just place some vegetables in a baking pan with some olive or coconut oil, add some spices (optional) and bake for 40-50 minutes at about 180C\150F degrees.

vegetables you can try baking:

Roots and Squashes: carrot, celery root, squash, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke
The fat burners: daikon radish, leek, onion, celery
The Cabbage family: broccoli, cauliflower, all cabbages, brussels sprouts
herbs and spices that are good to use: basil, cinnamon, cumin, dill, fennel, garlic, hot pepper, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme, turmeric, soy sauce, ginger

Recipe of The Month:
Healthy Baked Sweet Potato Latkes


Going healthy certainly doesn’t mean depriving yourself of the foods you love but rather making a better choice, choosing a healthier option.

Here is a healthier delicious version for latkes:
Bake them!

Ingredients:
4-5 sweet potatoes, unpeeled (about 450gm) – grate medium
1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped
1\2 bunch fresh parsley, finely chopped
1 organic egg
2 Tablespoons spelt
flour
dash of pepper
pinch Himalayan salt
1 tsp cinnamon

Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Spoon onto a parchment lined cookie sheet, forming latke patties. Bake at 200C/400F for 15-20 minutes. Turn the latkes over and bake for another 10 minutes until brown and crisp on both sides. Serve warm.


Have a very bright, synchronistic
