SUPERFOODS & SMOOTHIES

Super August

This is your life, not a dress rehearsal
Joshua Rosenthal

When I was in high school it was all about counting calories. I don't know how I did it but for breakfast I would have a little rice cracker with two tablespoons of cottage cheese, a few slices of tomato and a dash of olive oil. At school I would drink diet coke and have one large
green apple. That was it until I got home around two or three and had a low calorie lunch.
Shocking – don't you think ?!
God only knows how I managed to think with that kind of a diet.
But today. NO WAY HOSAY!
You won't catch me without having a nutritious breakfast.

Breakfast

So… Let's talk breakfast. Many people have a love/hate relationship with breakfast. You either love your morning cereal or eggs with toast or you are totally bored with the typical breakfast options.

Breakfast !!! It is actually as it sounds – Breaking the (night's) Fast!
We all have such busy lives that many of us neglect breakfast or just rush through it: eating in the car while driving to work, sitting in front of the computer, talking on the phone, or picking up a coffee and croissant and eating while walking….
Others skip breakfast altogether (besides the coffee of course) which can lead to irritability and overeating during lunch, at dinner and snacking throughout the day, increasing one's risk of becoming overweight, diabetic and developing other maladies.

Breakfast is actually our Most Important Meal
Study after study has shown that eating a wholesome breakfast is the key to good health. It boosts our metabolism, keeps us energized and helps with weight loss.

I never tell people what to do, but if you are skipping breakfast, ask yourself why? Did you eat too much the night before? Do you not have enough time in the morning? If breakfast does fuel our day, can you see the difference between eating whole grains, protein and veggies versus eating a doughnut and coffee?

(Adapted from Joshua Rosenthal: 14 days to a healthier you)

Superfoods and Smoothies

During my recent study trips to NYC I was introduced to the concept of Superfoods. Superfoods are different foods that are highly concentrated in nutrients, not created in a lab by scientists, and have been consumed by native peoples in various parts of the world for thousands of years. Adding them to our daily diet can be highly beneficial. One Superfood shake a day and you get more nutrients than the average person gets in one month.

They have unusual names like: Goji Berries, Spirulina, Maca Powder, Acai, Yakon Root, Bee Pollen, Chia Seeds, Aloe Vera, Mesquite, Reishi Mushrooms

In North America you can find most of them in health food stores or you may place an order over the web. Locating them here in Israel is a little more difficult but we can still work with what is available. If you are interested in learning about the different products, purchasing them, receiving further info, please contact me, some are in my Hebrew site or check out my coming up Superfood class.

Here are just a few:

Cacao (of course!!!) – Raw chocolate. The bean of the cacao fruit. Very high in Vitamin C, Magnesium (the most deficient mineral in people's diets), Iron and many other minerals and vitamins. Cacao is great for the heart, increases brain power, is a natural laxative, hormone balancing, the richest source of antioxidants (way more than red wine and green tea), makes you feel happy, in love (with your life) and relaxed.

Goji Berries – The Goji power!!! A berry that grows in the Himalayas. Highest source of protein on the planet. The number one food/herb in Chinese Medicine.

Spirulina - One of the most nutrient dense foods there is. A concentrated source of complete, balanced protein. 65+% protein. Fed Mexico City for 5000 years. Great for blood purification, has anti-inflammatory, joint strengthening properties and is high in antioxidants.

Maca – a radish-like root coming out of Peru. Sold in a dried powdered form.
Used for Anemia, to stop bone mineral loss, enhance memory, against depression, for menstrual disorders, menopause symptoms and reproductive disorders. And also is a great aphrodisiac!

Bee Pollen - The pollen produced by flowers that honey bees gather and bring back to the hive. Considered to be the most complete food found in nature: rich source of high-quality protein, contains all essential amino acids, great strength builder, brain food, packed with minerals and vitamins and enzymes. Try to purchase bee products from smaller, local hives, since it is very important that the bees are treated with respect and in a humane way and not the way they are in the conventional hives.

So lately, instead of my morning porridge, I have started making Superfood Smoothies! WOW!!! it is another quantum leap! It is a great way to jumpstart your day, get a boost of nutrients in one amazing drink. Give it a try!

Instead of skipping breakfast, take charge by incorporating superfood smoothies.
Especially now that it is warm and sunny.

Recipe of the month:
My Banana Chocolate Super(food) Smoothie:

I actually don't measure anything, but just throw different ingredients into the blender and add a bit of this and that till it tastes yummy.
So the amounts are just an approximations.

Blend:
- 1/4 - 1/2 cup water
- 10 almonds (soaked overnight and peeled)
- 1 ripe banana (may be frozen)
- 1 cup of either melon, grapes, mango, berries or any other fruit of your choice or all of them together
- 1-2 heaping Tablespoon raw cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon raw cacao beans/nibs
- 1 Tablespoon carob powder
- 1 Tablespoon bee pollen
- 1-2 Tablespoon goji berries
- 1 Tablespoon cold-pressed coconut oil
- cayenne peper (for some spark)
- 1/2 cup of ice
- if needed you can sweeten with honey, agave, maple syrup or a 1-2 dates

(you also can switch around and add any other superfood of your choice. I add: Maca, Spirulina. Mesquite and Acai)
