?How grounded are we

April 2011

It is not so much that we need to be taken out of exile.
It is that the exile must be
taken out of us.
Rebbe Schneerson

How grounded are we?

I am told that when I was small I always wanted to walk around barefoot.
I would take off my shoes whenever I
could, and my parents would try to get me to put them back on. I was thought to be headstrong.
Today, I realize I actually had very good i
nstincts and that it was my parents who should have been taking off their shoes.

Do you know what one of humanity’s worst innovations is?

Funnily
enough – it’s rubber-soled shoes.
The Earth has an electromagnetic field that is very important for our h
ealth and well being, but if you think about it, we actually are barely connected to it any more. We all walk on rubber soles (you hardly find shoes with leather soles anymore), have carpets and floor tiles in the house, drive in cars, and so on …
When was the last time you walked barefoot on the planet?

For the past few weeks I have been in Thailand and Bali, mos
t of the day walking barefoot on the beach and swimming in the ocean. There is something so natural and healing about walking barefoot - being in contact with and feeling the earth beneath, absorbing the natural vibrations, energy and electricity of the planet. The effect upon us is that it discharges electrical stress that we accumulate and it restores the body’s natural and stable electrical state. Being aware of this, you actually can feel yourself feeling better.

Before I left Israel, my acupuncturist specifically told me to take some earth from the garden and put it in a little bag and have it in my pocket while I fly in order to stay grounded. It truly worked - it is the first time that I had no digestive system problems upon landing, and everything continued working like a clock.

Grounding our bod
y is beneficial in dealing with chronic pain, back problems, cancer, inflammation, and more …. Even while talking on a cellular phone or working at the computer, it is beneficial to be grounded, being barefoot and connected to the earth or using different kinds of grounding patches (though I haven’t tried them out yet…)

How to ground yourself naturally: take your shoes off

- walk barefoot on the beach, sand, earth, grass (even if you live in a city, find a bench in a park, take off your shoes and feel the earth beneath you) for at least 30 minutes at a time.

- go into the sea, a river or lake (connecting to natural water is one of the most grounding things you can do)

- eat root vegetables or vegetables which grow at ground level: pumpkins, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, onions, ginger ….

- gardening - work in your garden or at a friend’s garden. They will appreciate it and so will your body. Grow herbs and p
lants on your balcony, getting your fingers into the earth.

- practice Yoga. People who begin practicing yoga on a regular basis report a sense of grounding in their body and their emotions. Feeling stronger, healthier, with more energy, having greater focus …

- have a routine that is healthy and fun for you – try to go to sleep and wake u
p at the same hours, eat at the same times, exercise regularly, and do any other practice that makes you feel good, whether it is yoga, meditation, dancing, painting … you will notice a big difference in your health and happiness

Food for thoug

When I go walking with my dog Dova, she always pulls to walk on the earth. She doesn’t like walking on the cement or sidewalks.
I wonder
…does she have the right instinct?
One that we have lost …
Is she actually grounding herself?

Recipe of the Month

Red Thai Rice and Salad Bowl

I just got back from Thailand and Bali. In Thailand they eat everything fried in unhealthy oils - lots of stir fried chicken, fried white rice, fried noodles, fried shrimp …

To the contrary, I wa
s drinking and eating a lot of fresh coconuts (the water and the “meat”), having papayas and mangos, and I was lucky to be staying near a healthy restaurant which served healthier dishes. I connected to the steamed red Thai rice.
Though it’s familiar to me, I have never cooked with it before.

This meal is so simple – but we sometimes need to be reminded o
f the simple things in life…

Tip:
Make a big enough amount of rice to intentionally have leftovers so that you can prepare something with it for the next day’s meal: stir fry some veggies and mix them in or throw it into a different kind of salad …

Ingredients and Method:

Rice: Soak 1 cup of rice over night (neutralizes the phytic acid that inhibits absorption of minerals) Drain and cook with 2 cups water.

Salad:
Lettuce Cucumber Red cabbage Shredded carrots Cubed tomato Olives Dressing: Olive oil, lemon juice, Himalayan salt – put on top of salad and toss together.

Topping: Raw Tehini poured on the top.

Place salad in bowl and place the rice on top of
drizzled with some raw tehini (I brought a little jar with me to Thailand) And, you have a light meal that will work for Passover too.

Let’s free our 2 feet from bonded footwear and get them back on the ground…
Whatever your tradition, Happy Passover, Happy Easter,
Happy Springtime – free and grounded
