November - Seasonal Eating

There is that saying: “Eat like a king in the morning, a prince at noon, and a peasant at dinner. “Well, what about: Eat mostly Green in Spring, Colors in Summer and lots of Orange in the Fall and Winter

I love salads!
I used to freeze in the winter! Even during the so called Israeli “winter”.
Only defrosted when spring came around. It took me a while to do the 1+1=2 and realize there is a connection. I had never even considered that eating cold salads during wintertime was contributing to my shivers. But actually it is very reasonable. And yet today it’s still hard for me to make the shift away from both my great, cooling, morning super shakes and delicious big salads at lunch to the more warming foods like soups and stews and morning porridge (don’t make a face - it is the tastiest breakfast ever). But now it is that time of the year again. The trees in my garden Know it: the lemons are ripening and the pecan nuts are falling to the ground.

Monthly Focus: Seasonal Eating

Our ancestors ate seasonally because they had no choice. Fresh greens grew in the spring, fruit ripened in the summer, root vegetables kept them going in the fall and people relied on animal food to get them thr
ough the winter. But when transportation and refrigerated trucks were invented, pretty soon we could eat, more or less, anything we wanted, anytime we wanted, worldwide. But there is a price to this kind of convenience. When we have ice-cream in the middle of January (unless we are in Thailand…) and hot barbecued foods in August, (which actually isn’t the best choice no matter what season it is) it is likely to confuse our body.
Eating locally grown food in accordance to the seasons helps us live in harmony with ourselves, our body and the planet.

Nature is so brilliant - it gives us the exact warming foods in the fall and wintertime: nuts, other oily foods like avocados, vitamin C rich foods to strengthen our immune system like oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruits, and also warming grounding root veggies like pumpkins, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots ….

Food Focus: Winter Produce

Fruits: Ba
nana, Dried Fruit, Orange, Mandarin, Lemon, Grapefruit, Persimmon, Pear (ripe)
Vegetables: Avocado, Beet, Brussels Sprouts, Carrot, Root Vegetables, Chili Pepper
s, Ginger, Garlic
Grains: Amaranth, Oats, Quinoa, Brown Rice, Wheat
Spices & Herbs & Teas: Ginger, Chamomile, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Anise, Basil, Black Pepper, Cumin, Fennel, Saffron, Turmeric
All Nuts (in moderation, or you might go nuts…)

Others: Olives, Honey, Orange Peel

Recipe of The Month:
My Favorite Finter (Fall + Winter) Snack

This tastes like Cake, actually even better…

Ingredients:
2 sweet potato
sauce: homemade tehini, or olive oil with soy sauce (additional cinnamon is optional)

Serves: 2

Slice the Sweet Potatoes into thick, 2-3 cm in width
Using a steamer strainer, steam for 5-7 minutes, or till soft, paying attention not to overcook
Move to a plate and spread each slice with Homemade Tehini Sauce, or drizzle with olive oil and soy sauce
For an extra blood sugar stabilizer you can add a bit of cinnamon

Who needs processed cakes and cookies and hydrogenated oils when you can have this.
It is the best snack ever!!
