Happy New Year

Happy New Year - September 2012

A successful individual typically sets his next goal somewhat but not too much above his last achievement.
In this way he steadily raises his level of aspiration.
Kurt Lewin

Many went back to school this month and so did I, this time in Dublin. Since our SuperLife company got accepted to the Food Works program in Ireland, we’ve spent our first two very intensive days in the GEC – The Guinness Enterprise Centre - together with 28 other small innovative Irish food companies.
8 weeks of very intensive mentoring, lectures, and seminars are ahead of us, at the end of which we will have to prove we have a winning product and great potential, which hopefully will get us into the 15 companies that will be chosen to receive a grant, and thereby have a very good chance to steadily make it to the top.

During the first two days we absorbed a lot of information. It was very interesting to receive info based on research of the eating habits of the Irish people.

Here are a few of the statistics which were quite surprising to me….
Where do you fall in?

1. The Irish prefer to buy Irish food.
Do you also prefer your food to be local? (which means it is more ecological and environmentally friendly, and as it doesn’t travel as far to reach you, is probably fresher…)

2. Value isn’t only about buying the lowest price – people are looking for good quality.
What about you? Do you buy the cheapest food you can find? (which might not always be the healthiest). Or do you also look for quality, willing to pay a bit more for higher quality food?

3. Low Fat – it sells – and most people think that it means “Healthy” – that info wasn’t surprising.
Well, if you have been following my newsletters, you probably know by now that “Low Fat & No Fat” isn’t necessarily healthy and it’s all about the kind of fat you are consuming. Stay away from all the unhealthy fats (like the hydrogenated vegetable oils: corn, soy, canola, margarine….) and go for healthy fats (like nuts, seeds, olive oil, coconut oil, techina…) and see how your body balances itself out.

4. Most of the Irish cook their meals from scratch – Shocking! But a good thing…
What about you? Do you cook your meals or do you eat out, buy readymade?
Do you warm it in the micro?

5. Most people here eat dinner between 17:00-19:00 - That too is very unusual.
In Israel people eat late…
What time do you eat your dinner?
The earlier you eat your last meal – the healthier you will be.

Looking at the Irish… they don’t necessarily seem to me to be the healthiest on the planet…
But if the statistics above (plus many others that surprised me) are either true or only peoples aspirations - they still are steps in the right direction.
